Sharing your location

Turn location sharing on or off in the field app, and know exactly when your phone reports where you are.

What sharing does

Location sharing is off until you turn it on, and only you can turn it on — the office can't do it for you. It is recorded against your account at Lupa, not just on the phone, and Lupa refuses any position report from you while it is off.

While sharing is on and the app is open on screen, the phone sends your position to dispatch every 5 minutes, and once straight away. Nothing is sent while the app is in the background or closed — there is no tracking when you aren't using the app.

Lupa keeps only your latest position; each report replaces the one before, so there is no trail of where you have been. Dispatch sees it as a pin on the office's map, with its age — see The map.

Turn sharing on

To share your location

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Under Location Sharing, turn on Share my location.
  3. If Android asks for permission to use your location, allow it.

What you'll see. Under the switch:

  • This phone's location permission is granted.
  • "Sending your position to dispatch every 5 minutes while this app is open."
  • "Last position sent at" and the time of the last report Lupa accepted since you opened the app.

If you deny the phone's permission, the app turns sharing back off and says Location permission was denied. Enable it in your device settings to share your location.

Send your position now

To report where you are right away, tap Send my current location. It works only while Share my location is on.

Turn sharing off

To stop sharing, turn off Share my location.

The phone stops sending at once, and Lupa records that sharing is off, so it refuses any further report. Dispatch's map no longer shows your pin.

If it says "Could not turn off location sharing." The phone has stopped sending, but Lupa did not hear that sharing is off. Turn the switch off again when you have signal.

Read the status lines

The switch shows what Lupa holds for your account, which can differ from the phone's own permission. The lines under it say what the app is actually doing:

Line Meaning
"Paused — nothing is sent while the app is in the background." Sharing is on; reports resume when you reopen the app.
"Not sending — location permission is not granted." Allow location for Lupa in your phone's settings.
"Not sending — location sharing is off." Sharing is off for your account.
"Not sending — we could not confirm with the server that sharing is on." The app could not reach Lupa, so it sends nothing.
"Checking with the server whether sharing is on…" Wait a moment.
"We could not reach the server, so we cannot show whether sharing is on." Tap Check again when you have signal. The switch can't be used until then.

If it says "Location sharing is switched off for your account." Lupa has sharing recorded as off, for example because it was switched off from another device. Turn the switch off and on again to share.
